I think the metaphor means that they could not marry.Their different levels of importance did not allow that. Miguel was a housekeepers son and Esperanza was a rich ranch owners daughter. She had to marry a boy from a "good family".

No, I do not think it is fair because they love each other.

Like Carey,I think it meant they were not meant to be together, as Esparanza said,"she understood she was above Miguel's station". He was the housekeeper's son while Esparanza was the Ranch owner's daughter.

I agree Carey, when Esperanza says "a deep river" she means she is above Miguel's station.People in those days were married according to their level in their society. The couple married had no say at all in their marriage.Parents arranged it.

Very insightful, Samantha! Can you believe that marriages are still arranged in different countries and religions today?

What?! That is not fair at all.

That's just sad.I'd never want that to happen to me. Good thing my religion doesn't do that.I mean, who would want to be married to someone you know nothing about or even met?! I repeat, that's just sad.

I agree! People should totally have the right to have a say in their own marriage and who they will spend the rest of their lives with!

Well, I do really agree with Carey. When the author used the metaphor, "Between them ran a deep river" I thought that Esperanza and Miguel were from two different backgrounds so that did not allow them to be together. My opinion right away I thought that the idea of not being with the one you like just because they aren't wealthy was not fair!

I think it mattered who she married because the boy has to be in the same rich class so he can take care of Esperanza. So her parents did not have to worry about her having money problems.

I think it mattered! Once you married, if you were female, your husband had to give you the financial support. They paid for all the expenses.

That's a bit like what I thought Carey. Nice job by the way, you summed everything up in one sentence. That's like everything in one!

She used the word "deep" because while Esperanza was very rich Miguel was only a poor servant.

Actually Mrs.Cabral, I do. However unfair it is, arranged marriage still happens. The Indian women and Hindu women must wear veils, and live their life concealed behind a veil on their faces.Their parents also pick who they marry, and once they marry, their husbands have the power over them. Whatever they say goes.
