On pages 72 and 73, Esperanza was annoyed with Miguel and Alfonso because they were keeping something hidden in an oilcloth. What are your predictions for what is in the package?
Also, in a separate post: What do you think the author's purpose is so far in the story? Support your opinion with details from the text.

My prediction is it is a flower that survived the fire because it said that he kept on getting it wet which I think means he was watering the flower.

There is a possibility it could be a cutting from roses or grapes, because in one passage they cut grapes off a vine to start the harvest. Another point is roses are the main theme. Also, plants need to be moistened every few hours so they can grow roots if being transplanted. In the book's back cover, it also says they go to a camp for Mexican farm workers. They may grow crops or grow roses to sell at a market.

My opinion is so far the Author's purpose is to express, because Esperanza is showing so many emotions through the book so far. For instance,in one passage it says,"She couldn't imagine living anywhere else" and "Her first breath of grief grew into a tormented cry". The author really shows how Eseperanza feels.

I think the authors purpose was to express. I think this because it made you happy when Papa was alive and the grape ceremony. Also, sad when Papa died and when the house burned down. Another thing is it expresses Esperanza's feelings is such a big part of the book.

My prediction for what Miguel and Alfonso are hiding in the oilcloth is what Carey said, a flower that survived the fire. It was the first thing that popped into my head! They were probably trying to suprise Esperanza, hoping that if would lift her spirits since the tragedies of losing her father and her home.

I think the authors purpose is to express. So far, I think that the author really showed Esperanza's feelings and emotions. When the author said, "Esperanza suddenly felt ashamed and the color rose in her face, but she still pushed the valise farther under the seat with her feet and turned her body away from Mama," it gave me a mental vision of what Esperanza was feeling and what she must be going through.
